There is no one as determined as a woman who wants to fit into her old size 30 jeans. As soon as the decision to lose weight is made, a state of emergency is immediately declared on the stomach area and will remain in place until the goal weight is achieved. For the war on chubby stomachs, we call on Psalm 151 verse 101 which reads: “Thou shall mix lemon, warm water and some honey in the morning to bring you closer to the promised flat stomach. And you shall have glowing skin while you are at it.”

You know a woman is on her journey to, or maintaining, a certain smaller size when she walks around with a bottle of warm water every morning and, if she carries that bottle with her throughout the day; you know ish is real.

There is an intriguing bond among those who have taken on the water bottle lifestyle. The water bottle cult usually bumps into each other in the kitchen at work or anywhere near a hot water dispenser.

One finds the other at the kitchen counter slicing lemons and squeezing the slices through the small mouth of the water bottle while the other adds hot water to her own bottle of lemon juice. The chat quickly evolves into a really intense conversation about when each one realized that they needed the water bottle and what else they have found to be effective in the weight loss battle. They part with salutes like “good luck”; “suffer for beauty”; “the things we do” and “hang in there”. That comes from knowing that for most of us, the battle is lost at the first sight of chocolate.

I refuse to give weight gain the upper hand and force me to invest in a new wardrobe so, I’m out here pushing that weight-won’t-dictate-to-me hustle. I see my old clothes in the wardrobe and think: “I’ll be rocking you soon.” I’m on that water bottle buzz, hard. Out here on that controlled, healthy eating tip.

Fellow fighters on the water bottle struggle, you have taken a road that is often travelled but also just as often, abandoned. Next time you meet a water bottle carrier, give them a nod and lift up your own water bottle as if making a toast. Believe me, they will understand the unspoken gesture of support and solidarity. It’s the coolest thing; the rise of the water bottle. Stay strong on your journey to your goal weight.
